Founded in 1144 in the wooded valley of La Saye, the Cistercian abbey of Beaulieu was built in the 13th and 14th centuries after the destruction of a primitive oratory. Gothic in style, the architecture offers a perfect summary of Cistercian art. The abbey church and some monastery buildings have retained their original characteristics and tell us a lot about the monks’ communal lifestyle. Turned into a farm after the French Revolution, then saved from destruction in the 1960s, the Abbey was bequeathed to the State in 1973 and is currently open to visitors thanks to the Centre des Monuments Nationaux.
